Saudi Arabia and the US: renewing a long partnership

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to Washington on 18 and 19 November was no routine visit—it marked the renewal and strengthening of an eight-decade-long alliance.

From the outset, the visit’s importance was evident—from the grand reception at the White House to the extraordinary joint investment summit held at the Kennedy Centre. Throughout, US President Donald Trump made a point of extolling his personal relationship with the crown prince and underscoring Saudi Arabia's importance as a political, economic, and strategic partner. A relationship that has steadily grown over decades took a giant leap forward this year—from Trump’s visit to Riyadh in May to the crown prince’s visit to Washington in November.

From its standpoint, Saudi Arabia believes that the key to a lasting relationship with the United States is ensuring it is grounded in institutions, agreements and legislation. The alliance established through the Quincy Agreement between King Abdulaziz and President Franklin Roosevelt in 1945 is being reconstructed today in line with the new 21st-century environment.

Saudi Arabia and the US: renewing a long partnership is our December cover story. In it, Al Majalla examines all aspects of the relationship, as well as the agreements and memoranda concluded during the crown prince’s visit to Washington.
