Will 7 October change the course of history?

Al Majalla was putting the last touches on its October issue when we woke up to a surprise on 7 October, when Hamas militants attacked deep into Israeli territory with rocket fire and infiltrated the Gaza border, entering Israeli settlements, killing and capturing many.

Coincidentally, the October issue had already included coverage of the 50th anniversary of the 6 October 1973 war, a surprise that Egypt and Syria delivered to Israel, which failed to predict it.

While the Middle East has a track record of leaving conflicts unresolved and tempering rhetoric, could this chapter be one that could reshape history and break with past patterns of failing to address the root causes of conflicts?
