The Israel-Houthi war achieves nothing and hurts both sides

Killing Yemeni civilians further ruins Israel's global image. Meanwhile, the Houthis cannot defeat Israel militarily.

The Israel-Houthi war achieves nothing and hurts both sides

The attacks and counter-attacks between Israel and the Houthi militia in Yemen, set against the backdrop of the Gaza war, are both futile and ineffectual. Both sides gain nothing and only further inflict damage on themselves.

For its part, Israel is further staining its image and reputation through its actions in Yemen, adding to the weight of the international outrage caused by its brutality in Gaza. It's a bad look for Tel Aviv, which already has most of the world enraged at its killing of thousands of women and children in Gaza. As for Yemen, the country is already poor and war-ravaged, so Israeli strikes that kill civilians there are just an added horror to an already-wounded nation.

Meanwhile, Iran plays a key role behind the scenes. It is directing Houthi action to distract from growing international pressure over its nuclear programme. Although Iran insists the Houthis operate independently and make their own decisions, their actions always seem to benefit Tehran. Coincidence? I think not.

It's unclear if the Houthis actually understand just how outgunned they are when up against a regional superpower like Israel, backed by a global superpower, the US. One need not look further than Gaza to see the ruthlessness of Israeli military might and its willingness to "respond" to threats using disproportionate force.

Lack of an endgame

If the Houthis were able to stop Israel's annihilation of Gaza, that would be one thing. However, it clearly does not have the capability to do so. Therefore, what do the Houthis think they can achieve by continuing their attacks on Israel?

Is it simply trying to bolster its credentials in the region by standing up for the Palestinians? It is highly unlikely that fighting Israel will prompt regional states to politically recognise the Houthis as the legitimate ruling authority in Yemen.

Attacking Israel and maritime shipping will also do little to bolster the Houthis' international credentials; the world will likely continue to see them as a rogue group. As things stand now, the Houthis' fate seems to be tied to the broader regional conflict with Iran—one that can be either solved diplomatically through US envoy Steve Witkoff or militarily by Israel.

In the final analysis of this deeply unequal and lopsided confrontation between Israel and the Houthi movement, one truth is increasingly clear: this is a "war" devoid of purpose. While no one can predict where it is headed, all indications seem to point to a worsening trajectory—particularly for Yemen, and possibly for the broader region as well.
