Lebanon death toll approaches 2,000 amid Israel offensive

Since 8 October 2023, Hezbollah launched a supportive front to help Hamas in Gaza. Since then, the group and Israel have been engaged in somewhat of a limited and controlled exchange of fire within the unspoken rules of engagement. Since then, Israeli air strikes across Lebanon have killed more than 1,800 people.

Last week was the deadliest in almost 20 years where nearly 1,000 people were killed, and more than 5,500 people were injured. Almost a million people have also fled their homes due to the recent fighting in southern Lebanon and southern Beirut, according to official estimates.

One of Israel’s stated war aims is to return tens of thousands of its own citizens displaced by the cross-border fighting. Now, with Israel launching a "limited" ground invasion, the chances of a full-blown regional war are only gaining steam.
