The tears of Ronaldo

Why the football legend’s tears over his team’s defeat in the World Cup carry a much deeper meaning

The tears of Ronaldo

It has become a familiar scene. Football players collapsing on the grass when hearing the referee’s whistle blow signalling the end of a match and, ultimately, the end of a team’s World Cup bid.

While this scene can even be observed in football matches of less prominent competitions, the World Cup is where the most charged and defining moments happen and where thousands of cameras are there to capture and broadcast these critical and emotional moments.

Perhaps the most iconic moment of the 2022 World Cup was when Cristiano Ronaldo — one of the greatest and most famous footballers of all time — collapsed in tears on the field after being defeated by Morocco.

He was seen wailing as he exited the stadium.

Before Portugal lost, however, fans and pundits were wondering if the team’s coach, Fernando Santos, would keep Ronaldo on the bench as he did in the previous match with Switzerland — which resulted in a victory for Portugal but was also considered, rather paradoxically, a crushing defeat for Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has proven to be the most skilled and famous player in the sport of football. Going by statistics and awards, Ronaldo is the greatest player in the world, along with Lionel Messi of Argentina.

There is an unending debate about which one of these two football icons is more gifted, but this is subjective and based on personal preferences.

Fall from grace

However, many observers viewed Portugal’s victory against Switzerland as an official fall from grace for Ronaldo, who was benched and replaced by rising star Gonçalo Ramos.

When Ronaldo was dropped from the starting line-up against Switzerland, Santos had to justify his shocking decision to observers and fans alike — the entire world wanted to know why.

Portugal’s next face off was with Morocco — the team that had earned the nickname “killer of giants” due to its impressive victories against some of the best teams in the competition.

With such a critical game at stake, observers were demanding to know if Santos would again sideline Ronaldo. Given Ronald’s popularity, Santos could not remain silent for long. He had to justify his decision and give a hint of what would happen next.

He told reporters in a press conference that he spoke with Ronaldo after lunch on the day of the confrontation with Switzerland and informed him of his decision to keep him out of the starting line-up.

He admitted that Ronaldo was infuriated by his decision because he was not used to sitting on the bench — particularly in such high-stakes matches. Santos, however, denied that Ronaldo threatened to quit the national team, which had been widely reported in the media.

After the match against Switzerland, which ended in favour of Portugal thrashing Switzerland 6-1 and Ramos captivating fans with his “hat-trick” — a feat nearly impossible in such a high-level tournament like the World Cup, especially at such an advanced stage — speculation surfaced over a growing rift between Ronaldo and Santos.

This was fuelled by Ronaldo’s public protest after Santos dropped him from the starting line-up of Portugal’s previous match against South Korea.

Mixed reactions

Some saw Santos' move as a ‘disciplinary’ act or wake-up call issued to Ronaldo to restore his sense of responsibility and discipline. While the move seemed harsh, Portugal’s astonishing victory over Switzerland vindicated Santos to some degree.

Some saw Santos' move as a 'disciplinary' act or wake-up call issued to Ronaldo to restore his sense of responsibility and discipline. Others, however, saw the move as a deliberate insult to Ronaldo tantamount to betrayal and stabbing the star in the back.

Others, however, saw the move as a deliberate insult to Ronaldo tantamount to betrayal and stabbing the star in the back. This was further reinforced when Santos kept him out of the Morocco match, perhaps with the unspoken approval of a number of his teammates.

Those who supported Santos' decision believed that the interest of the group should come before individual interests. But there were those who sympathised with Ronaldo, whether fans or not, because they viewed the matter as one of personal pride and honour.

They understood Ronaldo's anger, whether it was directed towards Santos or towards the Korean player who provoked him.

They interpreted his angry reaction as a moment of rebellion against authority, represented by Santos and also embodied in the expectation that the player must obey and be reasonable and responsible — in other words, to be part of the game, instead of being the game himself.

In fact, Santos cited discipline and responsibility as justification for his shocking decision to sideline Ronaldo in the game against Switzerland and even mentioned how Ronaldo celebrated the goals scored by his teammates.

Santos went so far to rationalise his decision that he said: "rather he [Ronaldo] was the very one who called on the team to thank the fans after the end of the match."

The Portugal coach succeeded not only in securing his team a ticket to the next stage of the World Cup, but also in imposing his dominance over a player who, himself, had turned into an institution and who had plans to play for the Saudi Al-Nasr Club for an unprecedented amount of money.

Existential debate

It all could have ended there.

Santos' decision to exclude Ronaldo could have been forgotten, or it could have become a vindication of his strategy and the values of discipline and commitment over unbridled individualism if, of course, Portugal ended up beating Morocco.

The debate that surfaced over Santos' decisions and, subsequently, Ronaldo's attitude, sparked existential questions around the sport such as: What should come first, the institution or the player? The individual or the group? The manager or the employee? The leader or the follower?

These questions were intricately linked to the outcome of the match against Morocco.

All that changed after the end of the match when Ronaldo left the stadium crying. Santos' argument in favour of 'discipline' and 'strategy' shattered in the face of Ronaldo's tears.

Santos' most prominent justification, "I cannot think with my heart" lost all its value. He used it to justify his decision to sideline Ronaldo in the match, which the football star wanted to be part of as a tribute to his long career in the World Cup.

A triumph of the heart

In the end, the heart triumphed over the mind.

Ronaldo's tears and brokenness reminded Santos — and, in fact, the whole world — that the secret to football's magic and its appeal to fans all over the globe is that it also speaks the language of the heart and that it belongs, first and foremost, to imagination, and not only to the language of numbers, plans, maps and statistics.

That moment — which Orson Welles calls the "incident" that creates cinematic shock and defies all expectations, scenarios, and precedents — was a dominant theme in the final rounds of the World Cup.

Each match came with its own big surprises and unique charm.

Every defeat or victory, which defied expectations, statistics and analyses, reflected, in the end, the triumph of the 'roundness' of the ball over squares, triangles, lines and sharp angles that relentlessly seek to institutionalise the game, supported by large sums of money invested in this attempt to confine the unconfinable game of football.

A moment of harmony

The end of the match between Portugal and Morocco represented a moment of absolute harmony between the game, the players and the spectators.

The victory of the Moroccan national team — which was not considered to be among the favourite or most popular teams, not to mention its representation of Arabs and Africans — was a victory for small, marginalised and underdog groups and, at the same time, an individual victory par excellence.

This victory resonated with each spectator who, perhaps, viewed it as a justice of sorts against an unfair and biased world.

This specific moment is also, perhaps, what prompted many groups and individuals to sympathise with Ronaldo who, before that moment, represented the elite.

It was his tears of defeat that eventually revealed him as an ordinary man dealing with his personal fate — one that is not always defined by grandeur and the adoration of the masses, but sometimes muffled by tears, defeat and disappointment.

And just like a ball, life has its ups and downs, whether it be the treachery of close associates or the betrayal of friends.
