Saudi Arabia and the US: an unprecedented partnership

The partnership between the US and Saudi Arabia has entered one of its most robust phases in history, marked by unprecedented economic, strategic, and defence collaboration. Central to this relationship is Saudi Arabia's pledge to invest $600bn in the US, across critical sectors such as technology, energy, and infrastructure.

Complementing this commitment is a historic $142bn US–Saudi defence package—the largest ever in the bilateral relationship—underscoring the depth of security coordination between the two nations. In fact, between 2019 and 2023, roughly 75% of Saudi arms imports were from the US.

Bilateral trade continues its upward trajectory, reaching $39.5bn in 2024. US exports to Saudi Arabia amounted to $19.7bn, dominated by machinery, vehicles, and medical equipment, while Saudi exports totalled $12.8bn, including nearly $3bn in non-oil goods—a clear signal of efforts to diversify trade beyond hydrocarbons.

On the financial front, Saudi Arabia retains 23% of its foreign assets in US1 bonds and equities, anchoring long-term stability and underscoring mutual confidence in the strength of the American economy.
