Gaza's man-made famine: a visual breakdown

In Gaza, where nearly 60,000 people have been killed since October 2023 due to Israeli military operations, half a million individuals now stand on the edge of famine. According to estimates by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), around 500,000 residents of Gaza face the risk of starvation as Israel continues to block vital aid from entering the enclave. In some parts of Gaza, 15% of the population lives under IPC Phase 5 conditions, classified as famine.

Médecins Sans Frontières has reported a sharp increase in malnutrition rates among children and mothers, with severe hunger tripling within just two weeks. More than 100 people have died from starvation since March, while more than 1,000 have been killed trying to get food since late May. Prices of basic commodities have surged by 3,000% since February.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the international community’s silence as a “moral failure”. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the situation as a man-made famine.
