Social media platforms have been the centre of controversy in recent years as concerns about their role in disseminating misinformation and scandals over data privacy have surfaced.
Despite these concerns, millions of Americans are on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, with TikTok being the most popular social media app.
A third of American adults (33%) say they use the video-sharing platform, up 12 percentage points from 2021 (21%). The other platforms had more modest or no growth over the past couple of years.
TikTok, primarily known for its short-form video sharing, has become especially popular among American youth, with two-thirds saying they are on the app. Adults under the age of 30 are on social media apps more than those over 30.
TikTok users in the United States spend 32% of their time on social media. Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram accounts command 20% of online social time. In comparison, the YouTube mobile app kept users engaged for 15% of all the time they chose to dedicate to social media.
