AI in the military: A lucrative industry that comes with great risk

Military applications of AI have become increasingly in demand, with more countries seeking specialised AI processors and boosting their spending on research and development of AI applications in modern weaponry.

AI applications in the military industry were valued at $8.35bn in 2023. Between 2023 and 2033, the market is expected to be worth $27.84bn, largely driven by the technology's increasingly global use in the defence sector.

But its application in modern warfare also raises alarm bells. The increasing use of automated killing machines comes with many potential security risks, not to mention ethical concerns.
